Some Men got out of fight by either paying the government $300 or paying someone else to take their place.

President Lincoln told Meade to follow and capture/stop the Confederate Army.

 General Lee 
 wanted to show the North the strength of the South and convince them to stop the war.

23,000 men died   28,000 men died (estimate)

Injuries
When the battles were over wounded men cried out in thirst and pain. Many of them died before they could be helped.
